Hair Dryer Buying Guide

1. Wattage

The higher the wattage of a hair dryer, the more heat it produces and the quicker it will dry your hair. The wattage is an indication of the power of the hair dryer.

Although there is no hard and fast rule, usually a hair dryer with wattage between 1300W and 1850W would be sufficient for most hair types. However, if you have thick, dense or curly hair, you can go with a hair dryer with higher wattage.

With higher wattage, you can always turn down the heat but still maintain power. That’s not the case with a hair dryer with low wattage.

2. Speed and Heat Settings

The more speed and heat settings a hair dryer have, the more control you have over the airflow that is produced, so you can select the option that suits your need. The higher heat setting is perfect for thick and coarse hair.

Those with thin or fragile hair should opt for lower heat settings. Also if your hair is only damp instead of wet, use the low heat setting to prevent over-drying. The different speed settings come in handy while styling the hair.

3. Ceramic Coating

Ceramic dryers emit non-damaging infrared heat that gives balanced heat distribution. It helps to dry the hair on the inside and the outside as well.

4. Ionic Drying

An ionic dryer breaks down water molecules for faster drying but also retains moisture in the hair for healthier long-term outcomes. By helping to neutralise positively charged ions in the hair, ionic dryers also condition your hair and reduce frizz.

5. Tourmaline Drying

This type of dryer has a gemstone coating that contains minerals that naturally emit negative ions and infrared heat and make hair shinier. It also enables the hair to endure much higher levels of heat without creating damage.

The best bet is to find a hair dryer that is a combination of each of the above mentioned three types.

6. Weight

A lightweight hair dryer is not only more comfortable to use, but it also gives you greater flexibility in terms of targeting your whole head evenly. It comes handy while travelling.

7. Attachments

These make a hair dryer more efficient and effective for better hair drying and styling. Following are the two attachments for a hair dryer:

A. A diffuser is great because instead of concentrating the heat in one area, it distributes it very broadly. It diffuses the airflow, gently drying the curls, rather than blowing them out, an ideal hair care accessory. It helps in lifting and separating hair to boost its natural texture.

B. Concentrator directs air from the dryer to a targeted space, useful for better control if you like to blow dry your hair straight using a brush. People with long hair are able to benefit from a concentrator attachment to reach all their hair and direct the heat more accurately and efficiently.

8. Cool Shot Button

It provides a blast of cold air to help styles set. It sets the look for long-lasting hold and adds shine. It is used after styling to finish and set the style.

9. Foldable Handle

This feature helps in making the hair dryer portable so that it can be taken while travelling.

10. Dual Voltage

A hair dryer having dual voltage can be used while you are abroad in a foreign country. Different countries use different voltages. While the voltage in India is 220 Volts, it’s 110 Volts in the USA.

  3. Hi Tarun, liked your post a lot, very informative. Thanks for the detailed review of these products. I am looking for a hair dryer that is >1800 Watts and I think I will go with Vega Pro Touch. But I can’t seem to find it anywhere online. Amazon and Nykaa have bad sellers with really bad reviews, so can’t buy from there. I need it within a week, so can’t try other online websites. Can you suggest some stores where I can go and buy personally? Local general stores don’t have this model, any electronic stores that would have this? Thanks again.

  6. Braun HD 180 or Braun HD 350 or Remington D5000 for use at home for drying and some basic styling occasionally (I’ve never used one, so I’m guessing it’ll be ‘occasional’, also please factor in ease of use and handy) of moderately thick, little frizzy, long, wavy hair?
One has cool shot, one has Ionic, I can’t seem to understand which one is more important for my hair type?
Picked these because all 3 of them are currently priced around 2500 on Amazon and are rated well.

Could you please suggest me the best dryer to go for with the following features. These specs are really required for me
    *1800W (at least) or more
*SEPARATE Heat & Airflow setting controls
    *Weight suitable for personal use
*Tourmaline/Ceramic heating element with Ionic Drying
*Removable Filter Mesh/Intake Cap (for longevity)

Your review did helped a lot in having a better understanding about hair dryers, appreciate it sir.

I considered the WAHL Super Dry 5439-024, but find it a bit bulky & heavy for use with own hair and the Braun HD180 doesn’t have a separate heat & airflow setting. The mentioned specs are required for me. Please do suggest me some good options with the above mentioned features and also the best brands to consider in India.

    Awaiting a response.

      • Hi Tarun,

        Thank you for your response.

I checked the Remington D5000; wondering whether it’s airflow would be as powerful as the WAHL, as it appears to be a very small travel dryer? Also, doubting whether the power cord length would be too short?
I tried a hands-on your top recommendation, WAHL Super Dry 5439-024 and it was pretty good, but only I find it a bit bulky & lil heavy for own use.

I wonder if there’s any other dryers in India, as powerful as WAHL, which is a bit easier in our hands too?
I kindly request you to help me with a few more good options in this price range considering my requirements.

Kindly consider the following specs which I really do require.
        *2000W (at least) or more
*SEPARATE Heat & Airflow setting controls
        *Weight suitable for personal use
        *Comfortable power cord LENGTH
*Tourmaline/Ceramic heating element with Ionic Drying
*Removable Filter Mesh/Intake Cap (for longevity)
        *BUDGET – 2k-3k Max

I hope my query will be answered. Awaiting a response.

        Thank you

        H.M.Nair.

      • Hi Tarun,

I was hoping you would suggest this one so I bought it with the idea if something goes wrong I can return it. But I must say this is an amazing product. Solves all the purposes. Heavy yes a little bit that’s ok. The blow speed is amazing so are the heat settings.

I’ve even seen this being used at Head Turners Beauty saloon.

One question partially out of the context, since I’m new to blow dry hair styling, could you suggest any article/video link where I can learn about styling my own hair with a hair dryer? I’m always on short hair.

        Thanks in advance.
