Immersion Rod Water Heater Buying Guide

1. The most popular immersion water heaters in India are either 1000 Watts or 1500 Watts. 2000 Watts immersion heaters are also available.

2. 1000 W immersion heaters come with a 5 Amps plug while 1500 W or 2000 W immersion heaters come with a 16 Amps plug. Most households have only a 5 Amps socket. So if your house does not have a 16 Amps socket, go with a 1000 W immersion heater or else you will need an electrician to change the socket to 16 Amps for 1500 W or 2000 W immersion rods.

3. The power, voltage and current are calculated using a formula that you must have studied in school: P = V * I -> Power = Voltage * Current.

Hence, 1000 Watts = 230 Volts * 4.34 Amperes so a 1000 W immersion rod can be plugged into a 5 Amps socket.

Similarly, 1500 Watts = 230 Volts * 6.52 Amperes so a 1500 W immersion rod needs to be plugged into a 16 Amps socket since 6.52 Amps exceed the current rating of 5 Amps socket.

Similarly, 2000 Watts = 230 Volts * 8.69 Amperes so a 2000 W immersion rod needs to be plugged into a 16 Amps socket since 8.69 Amps exceed the current rating of 5 Amps socket.

Note- India has 230V voltage.

4. Don’t use a 1500 W or 2000 W immersion rod with a 5 Amp socket. Otherwise, the socket will get burned. Install a 16 Amp socket at your home.

5. Don’t buy 5A to 16A converters to convert 5A socket into 16A socket for plugging in 1500W or 2000W immersion heaters. These converters get burned since they are unable to handle the load and can damage the immersion heater as well as a socket. I have personal experience.
