What is Steam Iron?

Steam Iron is different from dry iron in the sense that it applies steam to clothes while ironing. The steam is superheated water which eliminates wrinkles easily from clothes, unlike dry iron.

The steam iron has a holding tank where distilled water is poured and heating elements convert the water into usable steam. The steam comes out through holes from the soleplate in the bottom.

The steam helps in the sense that it moistens and loosens out individual fibres and making it easy for the iron’s pressing action to smooth out wrinkles.

Steam Iron Buying Guide

1. Wattage

The higher the wattage of the iron, the quicker the ironing by the iron since higher wattage means high steam output. But a more hot iron demands more handling care.

2. Soleplate

You should look for an iron whose soleplate is non-sticky, easy to clean and scratch-resistant. Soleplate is important since it comes in direct contact with the clothes.

3. Convenient Controls

The iron should have temperature control for different types of fabrics and it should be easy to see and effective.

4. Steam Control Button

The iron should have a button to control the flow of steam. It should have settings to turn the steam off, low or high.

Also, make sure that there is enough number of vents spread evenly on the soleplate to distribute the steam and making de-wrinkling your clothes easier.

5. Cord Length

A longer cord length will give you more manoeuvrability, making ironing more comfortable and flexible.

6. Comfortable Handle

The iron should have a comfortable handle since it acts as the interface between you and iron. It must be smooth to grip and not wide for you to hold comfortably.

7. Water Tank Capacity

If you tend to do a lot of ironing at the same time, choose an iron with a super-size tank so you would not have to refill the iron in-between the ironing.

8. Swivel Cord

Higher the swivel cord degree, better the flexibility you get while ironing.

    • Hey Priti, I never said that higher the watt the better the iron. I said that higher the wattage of the iron, the quicker the ironing by the iron since higher wattage means high steam output.

Wattage of iron depends on your needs. You can go with Philips GC1028 if you need 2000 Watts.

  6. Hi in GC 1905 model, does the steam come from all holes? I tested one, and the steam comes only from the top of the iron box. Not around the corners.

    • Hi Visalakshi, the steam comes from holes which are below the iron. The top one is for situation when you need water.

      • Hi Tarun, yeah the steam comes from holes at the bottom. But when I tested, it comes from only the center hole. Not on the other holes. Is it usually that way? It doesn’t come out like how they have put up in the advertising picture.

        • Hi Visalakshi, are you sure you are using it the right way? If yes, then maybe your iron is defective. Please read the manual. The picture in ads is true.

          • I am badly in need of a steam iron. I have ordered the same model twice from two commercial websites. Tested out in a Croma store as well. Everywhere it wasn’t working properly.

I heated up the iron. After it’s auto turned off, poured normal tap water into the tank. Waited until it’s heated up again, and started using it. Out of curiosity checked for the steam, but turned out it came from only the center hole. But the amount of steam it emitted was substantial.

            • Hey Visalakshi, sad to hear that. There are 2 purple buttons on the iron. One is for the top spray and other is for below steam. There are 3 settings for steam button. O is for no steam, small cloud is for minimum steam and large cloud is for maximum steam. Did you set the steam button to small or large cloud?

              Reply
          • I used both the settings and checked but the result was same. I was very much baffled as all the items everywhere I tried malfunctioned. Where did you buy yours from?

  7. Hi Tarun, If I remember correctly, you had Philips GC2840 as no. 1 in your list earlier. Any reason why you changed it? Is it because its production has been stopped because I did face issues finding it in Chennai. Thank you!

    • Philips GC1905 has linished Aluminium soleplate while Philips GC1920 has Black American Heritage soleplate which is better than Aluminium. This is the only difference. Choose the one which fits your budget.

      • Hi Tarun,

Also the GC1920 has a self calc management and 1905 doesn’t not have it. Is this a big deal ? The price for both are nearly same so which one is a better pick ?

Will steam iron fit fir all clothes types or to only specific. Or do we have any iron box with both dry and steam functionality.

    Reply
    • Hi Satya Narayana, steam iron will fit all clothes types. Steam irons are also dry irons if you don’t use the steam function. So you don’t need to buy dry iron separately.
