Yippee, Amazon Launches in India Today!

The moment has finally come when Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer, launches in India as many Indian shopaholics were waiting for it. Amazon has finally launched its marketplace in India today, Amazon.in, where third-party sellers can list their products and sell directly to customers.

Currently, they are selling in two categories only-Books and Movies & TV. In future, they plan to sell cameras, mobiles and other electronic devices. Amazon India is Amazon’s tenth marketplace in the world. They have currently 70 lakh local and imported books and 12,000 movies and TV shows.

The good thing for us is that now there will be a fierce competition between already existing Indian stores like Flipkart, HomeShop18, Snapdeal,eBay.in and Amazon. This will result in low prices for customers.

The bad thing for us is that Amazon will not sell its products like Kindle because of India’s FDI regulations do not allow multi-brand retailers to sell their products. Amazon has signed up 100 vendors across the country so far and has set up a 1.5 lakh sq.ft fulfilment centre in Mumbai to service online orders.

Any of the lakhs of retailers in India can hope to sign up with Amazon and sell their products online. Amazon will give free delivery on orders above Rs 499, but for a limited time, there is no minimum. So you can just grab your favourite book.

Payment options are credit card, debit card and cash on delivery(COD). I hope they launch gift cards in India too.
